Training for Clerks: Some Options to Consider?
Clerks 1-1 Induction (two-hour course) – run by SPCA
This relatively informal two-hour induction is ideal for new clerks and gives them a foundation knowledge in the clerk’s role, enabling them to understand better the elements involved.
The course is adaptable and not overly prescriptive; attention will be focused on particular areas taking into account previous experience and the individual’s own strengths and weaknesses. It will also serve as an introduction to the roles of both SPCA and NALC and help establish the relationship between the clerk and the Association.
We strongly recommend that a new clerk complete this as soon as possible when commencing their role with a Council.
ILCA – run by SLCC (Society of Local Council Clerks)
The Introduction to Local Council Administration (ILCA) is a Level 2, online sector specific learning tool which will support all new council officers in England and Wales in their roles in the first few months of employment, as well as those aspiring to go on and complete their Level 3 CiLCA qualification.
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the work of a local council, the clerk and its councillors.
Clerks – The Knowledge – run by SPCA
This six-hour course, run over two sessions, builds on the foundation knowledge from the Clerks 1-1 Induction and increases a clerk’s knowledge and understanding of their role.
Ad-hoc courses – run by SPCA
Clerks may wish to attend various ad-hoc courses to increase their knowledge on a specific subject such as VAT, budgets, bookkeeping, planning.
CiLCA – Portfolio course run by SPCA, qualification administered by SLCC
The Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCA) is a level 3 qualification. For more details please see our CiLCA page
